Top 5 Ingredients to Avoid:
Parabens, simply put, act as preservatives for skin products. They ensure the products have a greater shelf life and are often found in deodorants, moisturizers and shampoos. It has been discovered that Parabens can be particularly harmful to women, as they can mimic estrogen and disrupt the body's hormone system.
A study completed by Cornell University in the United States revealed that repeatedly exposing yourself to these chemicals and ultimately exposing yourself to elevated levels of estrogen can increase breast cancer risk. As these harmful substances emulate estrogen, it increases the division of breast cells and affects other hormones that stimulate breast cell division.
Frequently using products such as skin care lotions, air fresheners and perfumes that contain formaldehyde can result in damage to the central nervous system. This can increase the likelihood of developing headaches, mood changes leading to depression, insomnia, irritability and attention deficit as noted on the website for the U.S. government’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
In accordance to nervous system risks, products containing formaldehyde can attack your respiratory system, causing chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, and nose and throat irritation, according to the ATSDR. Please ensure that you check the ingredients of the products you are using, these chemicals have the potential to be extremely harmful for your skin, and your body as a whole.
Found predominantly in cosmetic products and fragrances due to its versatility and low-cost. According to research over the past few years, phthalates have been diagnosed in causing; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioural issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
Another harmful synthetic substance, predominantly found in in shampoos due to its detergent and foam-building qualities. The substance can result in serious eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, and allergic reactions. One major concern about SLS is its potential to interact and combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, a carcinogen. These combinations can lead to a host of other issues like kidney and respiratory damage. SLS & SLES can be found in shampoo, body wash/cleanser, mascara and acne treatment. Companies will often mask the chemical in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation "comes from coconut.”
The term "fragrance" when considering the ingredient in a cosmetic product refers to a complex mixture of dozens of chemicals. The arrangement of these chemicals together represents many health risks, can have been reported to encourage allergies, migraines, and asthma symptoms. Fragrance is a common ingredient in products that are required to have an appeasing scent, such as; perfumes, colognes, and deodorants. Additionally, it is used in nearly every type of personal care product. According to the Dave Suzuki Foundation, a research conducted on the damages fragrance can incur to asthmatics found that perfume and/or colognes triggered attacks in nearly three out of four individuals.
A National Academy of Sciences points out some vital facts: About 95 percent of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum (crude oil). They include benzene derivatives (carcinogenic), aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.
This is also a way for companies to keep their scent a secret so competitors do not copy their products. The question to ask would be what could they be hiding & what percentages of these fragrances are natural or synthetic.
Fragrance is something that is hard to avoid, as a consumer, it’s best to be aware of what these could contain and make your own decision of what to buy.
Well, what am I supposed to buy if most of my products contain these chemicals?
Now that you have got a basic understanding of what synthetic products are doing to your skin and body, it is time to eliminate these harmful substances out of your bathrooms and bedrooms and invest in fully organic products that are guaranteed to make you look, feel and function much better.
